18th CENTURY FURNITURE (Sugar Loaf Walking Map #26) is an absolute wonderland of whimsical handmade folk crafts balanced with brilliantly handcrafted reclaimed barnwood furniture. 18th Century Furniture is more than a shopping experience, it is a representation of one of the most beautiful, heart felt love stories I have ever had the honor of hearing.
The story of Peter & Manon VonUchtrup started when Peter was just 16 years old as he worked with Walter Kanon of The Barnsider Restaurant outfitting the ceiling with barnwood beams. Later in 1985 Peter opened a shop at 68 Wood Road designing & handcrafting one of a kind pieces of barnwood furniture.

The pine wood used for Peter’s furniture is retrieved from Canada and is between 100 & 200 years old. It was there in Canada where Peter met his future wife Manon, a feisty French-Canadian beauty. They were married 3 months later. Manon learned to speak English while working in Peter’s furniture shop. After 8 years at 68 Wood Road in Sugar Loaf, Peter bought a 300 year old house at number 58 Wood Road, with an original Sears & Roebuck house on the premises. It is that house that became the current 18th Century Furniture Store.

Trajety struck however in 2006 when Peter contracted a staff infection during a hernia operation. The infection attacked his heart & destroyed it. Over the next several years Peter & Manon’s strength was tested in ways one would not believe. Peter needed a heart transplant and it took a few years to get one. He has since received one & is better than ever! He & wife Manon continue to be prominent figures in Sugar Loaf, creating quality handmade products all the way.
It is a story that can not be felt in words. I will just say that every single handmade “heart” item in their store has special meaning to them and will in turn have a special meaning to you.

Both Peter & Manon are a testament to love, devotion, strength & courage. Just know that when you visit 18th Century Furniture and are in awe of the amount of magnificent handcrafted items, you are not just going to buy a fine product…you are supporting the belief that love conquers all, each day is a gift and life should never be taken for granted. And while 18th Century Furniture is not in the center of town, you absolutely must walk a few more steps and treat yourself to this one of a kind shopping experience.

“Every day is a gift..that’s why they call it the present”.
Sorry boys, this one’s for the girls!
A new cooperative for creative women is being launched by Rena Wilhelm of The White Weathered Barn (Romer’s Alley) Sugar Loaf and by Dana Anders, whose handmade cards have appeared in many of Sugar Loaf’s boutiques. This cooperative is run by women in support of women. It is a platform for those artisans who have always wanted to pursue their dream of having their own shop but could never quite take the plunge on their own. Now you can dip your toes into the water and see what it is like to experience that dream.
The Co-op is a whimsically fresh inspired classy-sassy-contemporary-chic retail boutique currently being designed by Rena, a former interior designer. We are looking for artisans to fulfill a wide range of arts & crafts. This is a curated boutique looking to find handmade apparel & accessories, paper artistry, hand sewn goods, unique crafts, fine art, photography, children’s gifts, as well as very unique jewelry artisans. Your work must be entirely handmade by you, must be of impeccable taste & quality & priced according to today’s market.
Let’s talk craft! AND…let’s definitely chat about why buying handmade is so valuable to both artisan & buyer. First & foremost the artisans of Sugar Loaf create & design products because it is their passion, not their job. They have willfully chosen to earn their living purely on the back of their talent & craft. They are courageous & should be commended for living a life that is based on simplistic values & a “back to basics” philosophy. In my own humble opinion, the term “Starving Artist” should be eradicated from our vocabulary.

Consumers who purchase another’s handicraft are engaging in a relationship; a relationship between the artisan & their craft and ultimately the relationship the consumer has with the product. Don’t we want to own items because they touch us, because we respond to them, because it means something to us, because we respect the talent & time of the artist? Doesn’t the exchange result in a special moment?..one that you don’t often receive standing in line at the mall?

For every brush stroke, stitch of thread, click of lens, chisel of wood, mold of clay, drop of oil, crack of pepper, blend of herbs, manipulation of textile, arrangement of flower, blend of scent, hammer of metal, dip of wax, mix of ingredients & execution of 3-dimensional vision…there was a purpose & passion behind it. Let’s encourage and support the young children of today when asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” that it is admirable to respond, “I want to be an artist!”. Lovin’ that!

Hey why not get nutty & take the Handmade Pledge??!!

Bostree features a varied selection of unique functional and decorative American craft created by numerous local and national craftspeople as well as by its owners, Theresa and Ray Boswell. They first opened Bostree in 1982 in Scotts Meadow, Sugar Loaf, NY. In 1984 Theresa and Ray purchased a building at the other end of town on Wood Road where they moved their gallery, home and studio under one roof. In 1999 Theresa moved the gallery to its current location in the center of Sugar Loaf and in 2001 Ray completed the building of his three floor studio next to their home to accommodate his growing number of pottery students.
