What do The Clash, The Specials, Gov’t Mule, Keith Richards, Robert Palmer have in common? They all have covered “Pressure Drop” by Toots and the Maytals. The man that is credited for inventing the word “Reggae” will be coming to Sugar Loaf and performing at Sugar PAC November 3rd at 8PM. Toots and the Maytals, originally called simply The Maytals, are considered legends of ska and reggae music. Frederick “Toots” Hibbert, the leader of the group, was born in May Pen in the Parish of Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of seven children. He grew up singing gospel music in a church choir, but moved to Kingston in 1961 at the tender age of sixteen.
“Key founding figures in ska, rock steady and reggae music” Toots & the Maytals hold the current record of number one hits in Jamaica, with a total of thirty one. Their 2005 released True Love, an album consisting of re-recorded versions of their earlier hits, alongside Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Keith won the Grammy Award that year for best reggae album. Do not expect to sit down for this entire concert.
