As an added feature this year’s festival will have as many as 30 personal trains arriving on the East Penn Railroad tracks on May 21st at 12PM and staying in Sugar Loaf through 2:00PM. These personal train enthusiasts known as rail speeders refurbish track inspector cars (speeders) and travel the rails to events exhibiting their hobby. The rail cars will be in town for about two hours enjoying the festivities and permitting interested festival goers to view their cars.
Once track inspector rail cars, speeders would go out with a crew to maintain the tracks. The cars were built to carry from two to as much as a dozen people. Enthusiasts restored and rebuilt these to use on the rails today, as festival goers will see on May 21st.
Speeders groups are able to use railroad tracks through arrangements with the track owner. The time on the tracks is leased by the club. The route to Sugar Loaf for the festival will begin in Sparta, NJ on the NYSW (New York Susquehanna and Western), through Pelton where it joins with what is now the East Penn Railroad, and on to Sugarloaf and beyond.
